The main aim of this brief was to add a side return extension in West Hampstead to rejuvenate a dated 1980’s ground floor kitchen / dining space. The clients were keen to open up the existing rear of the house by demolishing the structural walls which currently restrict the fluidity and interaction while cooking, dining and entertaining. In an effort to gain better light to the new internal side return a lightwell was inserted providing a central external space for planting, reading and entertaining.
The clients had gathered a vast array of trinkets and artefacts on their travels over the decades and sought to create spaces in which to display them. With this in mind intimate niches were created and surfaces added on which these could decorate and enliven the calm painted white backdrop.
