The granary to this attractive 19th Century country house near Kemble in the Cotswolds was totally refurbished and also modified externally to rectify a previous poor quality conversion. The granary sitting adjacent to and connected internally to the former farmhouse sits slightly raised in the local topography offering views out across the paddock and bridleway beyond.
The existing concrete floor slab was excavated to give increased headroom with a large section of the first floor being brought into use – having previously been a double height space with little purpose. The rear elevation has been clad in Cotswold stone to match the existing stonework and timber casement windows added featuring chunky rustic timber lintels.
The interior was reconfigured to suit everyday family life with a large double sided wood-burning stove to heat the main living spaces and utilising the existing bore hole for ground water. We created deep punched window openings in the thick stone external walls enabling long vistas across the paddock and vegetable gardens to the north of the site. The interior palette is a sympathetic combination of timber, stone and metal finishes with bespoke joinery internally to the living room, home office, reading room and boot room.
